As part of our dedication to assisting stakeholders and construction partners in their pursuit of a Carbon Net Zero future by 2050, we furnish embodied carbon data for each of our products.
In instances where geosynthetics are utilized as alternatives to traditional construction methods, significant reductions in embodied carbon can be achieved compared to the transportation and installation of large volumes of aggregates. Potential CO2 savings range from 50-90%.
Examples include:
– Geosynthetic consolidation layers replacing crushed stone drainage blankets
– Geocomposites for structural drainage instead of concrete blocks
– Fin drains for trackside and carriageway drainage as alternatives to French drains
The assessment of the carbon footprint for these products follows a ‘Cradle to Gate’ analysis using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP). It details ‘Market Based’ assessments of emissions from electricity use. Results vary for each product and typically fall within the range of 1.2 – 3.1 kg CO2e per kg of manufactured product. This analysis encompasses the embodied carbon in the raw materials used to manufacture the products, transportation to the manufacturing site, and emissions during the manufacturing process.
